School Board Debate
We're getting a preview of the November elections here locally with a contested race for the at-large position on the Texarkana Arkansas School Board. Candidates Glen Spears and Charles Denmon squared off at a forum last night at Big Jake's Barbecue on Arkansas Boulevard sponsored by the Miller County Patriots. The candidates were largely in agreement but did set out a few differences. Questions from the audience focused on the ability of TASD to compete with the other three Texas school districts in the city. Early voting for this race began yesterday, and election day is September 21.
Governor Beebe opens local HQ in Texarkana
Governor Beebe traveled to Texarkana yesterday to open up the regional Headquarters for the coordinated campaign. While the HQ will support all Democratic candidates, the bulk of the funding ($1.2 million for the statewide effort) has come from Beebe's fundraising. Both parties now have open and active campaigns in Miller County. Locally, there are only a few contested races: Miller County Judge, a JP race, and a couple of non-partisan races (Texarkana mayor, Ashdown mayor). Here's more from the Texarkana Gazette.

We gathered yesterday to pay tribute to the victims of September 11 and to thank those civilian and military workers at the Red River Defense Complex, Texarkana's largest employer. Here's a pic:
