Governor to veto HB2780?
The governor has yet to veto a bill in his 91-day tenure in the office. He mentioned on AETN two weeks ago that he was considering vetoing an appropriations bill or two that is in violation of Amendment 14 as "special and local" legislation. John Lyon published an article Saturday that follows up on the governor's television show and his post-session conference, where several bills that still await action were discussed.
HB2780 by Rep. Dawn Creekmore (D-Hensley) was transmitted to the governor's office on April 4 and awaits his signature. Word is circulating that he may veto the bill on equal protection grounds. This identity fraud bill allows a security freeze to be placed on a person's consumer report, and it is my understanding that the governor's concern deals with the treatment of senior citizens and in-state vs. out-of-state residents. You can follow the status of HB2780 here. In Arkansas, a veto override requires a mere majority. The last veto in Arkansas was SB1174 of 2005, the proposal to allow municipalities to designate Entertainment Districts, where alcohol could be consumed publicly.
