National Guard to open new GED education facility
The Arkansas National Guard just cut the ribbon on the Phase I facility of the new "GED Plus program" today. The program was launched to provide assistance to individuals who would otherwise be ineligible for military service, to gain a general education diploma and place them on a track to future career goals.
The phase I facility was completed at a cost of $750,000. Phase II will include additional teaching facilities as well as a residence hall for participants. The next phase of the project is projected at approximately $18.4 million and is expected to break ground in the fall of 2008. Department of Education Statistics reflect 3.7 Million young adults (16-24 years of age) without a High School Diploma.
The National Guard's program trained 709 students in its "pilot" year in 2006. This year, so far in 2007, the program has trained 2,000 students from all 54 states and territories.
