Community leaders held a meeting last Tuesday to best determine how to save the town’s post office. The postal service has proposed closing this facility. At the meeting, residents were told that the post office in Ogden brought in approximately $17,000 in revenue last year, but it cost over twice that to run it. However, the post office in Ogden means much more than merely a place to check a post office box or weigh and ship a parcel. The loss of the post office can affect the town’s identity. Postal revenue has declined for several years, and culprits include the rise of the popularity of e-mail and the ability to pay many bills online. However, in places like Ogden, residents don’t have options for Internet service.Residents were told that the most effective means of keeping the post office intact is by filling out the survey if you live along the Ogden postal office. If you live elsewhere, you can sign the petition at the post office, and I’m sure you can attach your thoughts on the impact that the loss of the post office would have on Ogden and southern Little River County. Community leaders are seeking any relief possible, including having a part-time employee located at the office to keep some hours at the Ogden location.
