ABC News headed to the Capitol Wednesday?

Word is that ABC 20/20 is headed to the House Committee on State Agencies to tape the committee hearing that will consider Rep. Dan Greenberg's (R-Little Rock) re-vamped HB1035 (the bill formerly known as the "Edifice Complex Act" but which has been renamed to reflect a more suitable title). The bill has been amended to only include the restriction from renaming of state "buildings and structures" after elected and salaried public officials who are currently in office or who have held office within the last 10 years.

Talk about pressure! Here are my previous thoughts on the original proposal. Some of the same concerns remain: first amendment issues, "non-building" state property that includes lakes, streams, etc., but I'll reconsider the newly revised bill. One of the questions I consider when examining legislation is whether it is needed. That will be an issue with me here.

Rep. Greenberg acknowledges the recent re-naming phenomenon when discussing the bill but is adamant that this legislation is not directed at any specific indicividual. I think the intentions are good, and I can understand why the bill has been filed. It ought to be a good debate, and I'm not going to commit either way until I consider the amendment over the weekend while skipping rocks over at Mike Huckabee lake.

The revised bill can be read here.
