Good catch by the Democrat-Gazette
As part of my periodic e-newsletter I send out to the list last week, I mentioned the recent New York Times article that ranks Arkansas No. 1 when it comes to state ranking of school spending as a percentage of personal income. I also posted a blog entry on this ranking this week -- I'd thought about expanding that post to mention that in order to meet our constitutional obligation of adequacy (which admittedly involves much more than sheer money), we had to top the national rankings of spending as it relates to average income.
The folks over at the Democrat-Gazette dug a little deeper into the 2004-05 census data used asthe basis for the article (which was also posted here previously). It turns out that Alaska, not Arkansas, has the distinction (but we're still #8). Seems the postal abbreviation "AK" tripped up Sam Roberts at the Times. Here's the ADG Editorial.
