The shrinking of Millwood Lake

My first bass at Millwood -- August 17, 1978When I was three, my folks sold our beat up travel trailer and bought a cabin two miles down the road from Yarborough Landing at Millwood Lake. I spent about half my weekends from that point until I turned 17 there at Millwood in Little River County. Once one of the biggest fishing spots in the South, it's now in trouble due to the build-up of silt and the influx of alligator weeds and hydrilla.

I spent the afternoon there on Wednesday discussing ways to save the lake with federal, state, and local officials. Once Giant Salvinia finds its way to Millwood, it'll smother out much of the rest of the plant life in the lake. Here are some previous entries in the blog about Giant Salvinia: 5/20/07; 6/30/07; 7/26/07. Update: Here's today's Texarkana Gazette article.
