Remembering 9/11
There's an extensive list of memorials taking place across the country today. Here are a few of them:
New York:
5:00AM - Pool Signal from Ground Zero comes up
7:00AM - Families begin to gather
8:40AM - Official program begins, introduction for a statewide moment of silence
8:46AM - Moment of silence to remember the first plane hitting the North Tower (Churches ring their bells across the city.)
--About this time responders begin reading the names of the victims.
9:29AM - Moment of Silence before the opening bell at the NYSE
9:30AM - Moment of silence to remember the second plane struck the South Tower
9:59AM - Moment of silence to remember the fall of the South Tower
10:29AM - Moment of silence to remember the fall of the North Tower
12:30PM - Program Concludes
Washington, DC:
9:30AM - Pentagon ceremony begins at the 9/11 stone at the impact area, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace and Defense Secretary Robert Gates will lay a wreath. Vice President Cheney will also be in attendance.
9:30AM - Congressional Remembrance Ceremony
Location: West Front Steps of the U.S. Capitol
3:00PM - Marine Corps Band arrives
4:00PM - Band plays opening music
4:25PM - Members proceed to west front steps of The Capitol
4:30PM - EVENT BEGINS
4:31PM - National Anthem played
4:34PM - Invocation by the Reverend Daniel Coughlin, Chaplain to the U.S. House of Representatives
4:36PM - Remarks by:
- Rep. Roy Blunt, Republican House Whip
- Sen. Mitch McConnell, Republican Senate Leader
- Sen. Harry Reid, Democrat Senate Leader
- Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Democratic House Leader
4:48PM - Benediction by Rev. Barry Black, Chaplain to the U.S. Senate
4:50PM - Playing of "God Bless America"
4:54PM - Members leave
4:55PM - Closing music
5:00PM - Event ends
In Shanksville, Pa., the morning memorial service will begin at approximately 9:55 a.m., with the traditional reading of the names of the passengers and crew of Flight 93 and the tolling of the "Bells of Remembrance." The brief service will conclude with laying of wreaths at the crash site.
