Governor: No regrets on tax cuts, will continue if possible
Governor Beebe addressed the recently-released revised budget forecast from DFA that shows that state agencies may have to cut $107 million in the coming fiscal year. The report says that the state will only be able to fund a little over half of appropriations listed in the B category of the Arkansas budget for the next fiscal year. The report is based on national and regional forecasts that anticipate a slowdown. The largest expenditures that could be affected if this becomes reality include Medicaid and higher education. Items in category A, such as public schools, prisons and health and human services, are of highest priority and would not be affected. Lower categories are funded as revenues become available.
The governor said he's willing to cut the state's budget to pay for further reductions in the grocery tax but won't touch education, human services or law enforcement to do it. Here's more from the Associated Press.
