Ban on novelty lighters?

You've probably never given much thought to novelty lighters and certainly never thought that they'd be debated in state capitols around the country. You may remember that we previously discussed a potential ban of them here on the blog. Incoming House member Andrea Lea (R-Russellville) advocated a ban after two young children in Russellville died in a fire started as the two boys played with a motorcycle-shaped lighter.

Some locales here in Arkansas have enacted ordinances banning the sale of novelty lighters. Maine became the first state to ban them earlier this year. Now, a bill has been filed in the Texas legislature to ban them (and in Tennessee as well). Whether you think it's a good idea or an unnecessary intrusion by the government, this is a trend that is picking up steam. I'll be interested in seeing whether Lea or other legislators file legislation here in Arkansas on this issue.
