Blog news: Edwards retains staffers after learning of remarks

Presidential Candidate John Edwards is under fire after two campaign staffers wrote disparaging remarks (very disparaging) about the Catholic Church on their personal blogs prior to being hired on the campaign. He's keeping them on staff after learning of the remarks. His formal response said that the remarks "personally offended me. It's not how I talk to people and it's not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people."

"That kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone in my campaign, whether it's intended as satire, humor or anything else." He said he wouldn't fire the staffers on the basis that he believes "in giving everyone a fair shake."

The best angle from this story comes directly from the Catholic Church at Catholic Online (click here). William Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, called the employees "anti-Catholic, vulgar, trash-talking bigots."
