Competing tax relief proposals (Updated)
Looks like there is some movement (mainly behind the scenes) on the 2007 tax relief package. We're voting today on the House alternative ( HB1337), which is largely meaningless, as it appears as though a couple of the items sought in this package will be enacted (repealing the income tax for residents below the federal povery line -- a pricetag of $16 million), while other portions of it may go by the wayside (earned income tax credit). This would make both sides of this debate happy. For what it's worth, I believe the one-half repeal of the state sales tax on groceries is very beneficial for Texarkana and southwest Arkansas. Update: HB1337 passed by a vote of 85-12. The individual votes on this bill will be up at this link within a matter of minutes.
