S-CHIP veto override?
The U.S. House has scheduled an override vote on the S-CHIP veto for October 18. If the previous vote remains unchanged, the override will fall about two dozen votes short. The Senate has the votes for an override. S-CHIP (State Children's Health Insurance Program) funds health care coverage for children whose families earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance (called ARKids B here in Arkansas). The vetoed legislation would expand the program by $35B through a cigarette tax increase. The only Arkansas legislator who voted against it won't vote to override since illegal immigrants may be able to obtain the benefits through giving fake social security numbers. The Arkansas legislature adopted a resolution during the 2007 session urging the reauthorization of S-CHIP.
