Additional revenue from the severance tax: roads vs. higher education?

Governor Beebe said yesterday he would not support using money from an increase in the natural gas severance tax for higher education. He's in support of directing any additional revenue on an increase to roads.

Former Arkla CEO and 1990 & 1994 Gubernatorial candidate Sheffield Nelson announced last week that he was heading an effort to put an initiated act on the 2008 ballot to impose a 7% severance tax on natural gas to provide college scholarships and otherwise raise the quality of higher education in Arkansas. Thursday's Arkansas Leader takes a look at Nelson's proposal.
