Election results

Nine states held elections yesterday. Kentucky has a new governor. Republican incumbent Ernie Fletcher was defeated by Democrat Steve Beshear by a 59%-41% margin.

Democrats won control of the Virginia Senate by taking four Republican seats in northern Virginia and the Tidewater area.

A record number of women won legislative seats in New Jersey yesterday. In Texas, Lance Armstrong led the push for up to $3 billion in bonds to create a cancer research institute, which was approved by voters. Governor Haley Barbour easily won reelection in Mississippi.
