Election Day 2007
The polls are open in nine states today. Voters in Texas, Utah, Washington, Maine and Oregon are deciding the fate of various ballot items, and voters in Kentucky will decide whether to oust Governor Ernie Fletcher (R). In Kentucky, the governor and lieutenant governor run as a ticket.
Off-cycle state legislative elections are being held today in Virginia, Mississippi, and New Jersey. In Mississippi, Democrats control the House and Republicans control the Senate. The House is a top target by Republicans. All seats in both chambers are up every four years. Also in Mississippi today, voters are deciding whether to keep Governor Haley Barbour (R) or elect Democrat John Arthur Eaves.
Control of the Virginia Senate is up for grabs today. The margin is currently 23 Republicans to 17 Democrats, and Democrats expect to pick up seats in that chamber. In New Jersey, Democrats hold the majority in both chambers, but only by four in the Senate. Here's a good preview on legislative races in that state.
