Real ID clash avoided
The Real ID showdown between the federal government and the states is over for now. States have resisted the 2005 Federal Real ID Act, calling it an underfunded mandate. The 86th Arkansas General Assembly adopted two resolutions regarding our compliance. Other states have vowed not to comply at all with the act.
Arkansas received an extension until May 11 to comply with the act, but one state (Maine) had been flirting with a March 31, 2008 deadline. Without compliance, residents of those states could not have used their driver’s licenses to board airplanes and enter federal buildings. The deadline for compliance has now been extended until January, 2010. Here's more from Information Week, and here's a previous blog entry on the act.
