Planning and leadership model
We're here with former Speaker Newt Gingrich discussing his leadership model. Why would a Democrat want to take a page out of a Republican's playbook? Well, for one, this is the Republican that engineered the revolution that crippled much of our party for a decade. He did it by thrusting issues to the forefront where he had huge margins on his side, something he learned from Reagan. Here's the model.
He stressed the "metrics" step and said that few have mastered it. He suggests the following books on metrics:
- Leadership: Rudy Giuliani
- The Turnaround by William Bratton (Giuliani's chief of police)
- Moneyball by Michael Lewis (how the A's stayed on par with the Yankees with 1/3 of the money)
A couple of specific ideas:
- If a student can graduate a year early, the 12th year should be a scholarship.
- If you stay in school and work part-time, your earnings should be tax free.
He uses these two ideas to show how one could change the failed current model by providing meaningful rewards so they can get what they want, and we can get what we want. Next is Lee Hamilton, and then we'll hear from Kathleen Hall Jamieson.
