Shot at the buzzer: Who makes the call?
Two Spartanburg, South Carolina legislators introduced a bill earlier this year in the South Carolina Legislature to require referees in high school playoff games to watch video replays. This comes after Spartanburg High School threw up a 75-foot prayer that rattled around and through the rim at the buzzer in the AAAA state championship game. A referee later signaled that the shot came too late, and after a long huddle (without looking at footage of the televised game), the shot was confirmed to be no good.
The bill failed, but it shows that Legislatures are sometimes willing to delve into high school and college basketball and football issues (brings to mind the eternal Arkansas-ASU debate). Here's footage of the South Carolina game:
