The Economist: Turkey on the brink
Now that I'm back stateside, I'll post a couple of summary posts about Turkey's democracy and culture. Turkey is the only democracy in a predominantly Muslim country with real checks and balances, and its politics are fascinating yet complex.
The Economist has a timely article that takes a look at a current issue dealing with the country's ruling party, the Justice and Development Party (AKP). The party is on the brink of being banned in the country. Just last week, the country's Constitutional Court overturned a law to permit women to wear the Islamic-style headscarf at universities. That ruling to some makes it likely that the court will indeed ban the AKP. Click here for the Economist article.
