750 million reasons to achieve unitary status

On Monday, the Pulaski County Special School District filed a motion seeking unitary school status in the long-running desegregation case pending in the Eastern District of Arkansas. U.S. District Judge Bill Wilson ruled that the Little Rock School District was unitary in February. The North Little Rock School District, already ruled partially unitary, filed for release in September.

Over the past 25 years, Arkansas taxpayers have spent more than $750 million on the three districts (LRSD, NLRSD, PCSSD) for this suit -- money no other district receives. In 2006, the state funded $60,388,078 towards this case. That money alone would allow the government to cut a cent and a half from the regressive grocery tax. Here's an informative article from yesterday's Arkansas Leader, which outlines objectives the district has sought in an effort to comply with its plan and to satisfy federal judicial supervision.
