Voting on New Year's Day?
This isn't about presidential primaries, although we may be holding New Year's Eve voting parties at some point in the future. Voters in the Valley View subdivision of Washington County may have to head to the polls on New Year's Day if Prairie Grove voters pass its annexation election on Dec. 11. Farmington voters passed its annexation election for the same area in a Nov. 13 election. Residents in Valley View would be voting to determine the city in which they want to be annexed.
Rep. Marilyn Edwards requested an AG Opinion on whether the election can be moved, and Attorney General Dustin McDaniel stated that it's unclear whether city officials are authorized to schedule the election on January 2, 2008. Hopefully early voting will take care of the problem for most voters. It would still leave poll workers and election officials with the duty of opening up polling locations on New Year's Day. Here's a related article in the Northwest Arkansas Times.
