Governor Beebe has received notice that the first stage of federal disaster assistance has been approved, making state and local governments eligible for federal assistance pertaining to emergency response costs, as well as the repair and replacement of public facilities and services. Governor Beebe will return to storm-damaged areas on Friday, accompanied by FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison and Senators Lincoln and Pryor. They'll be in Highland at approximately 2:00 this afternoon, and Atkins during the 4:00 hour. Aerial surveys of damage in other counties will occur between those two stops.
The Arkansas National Guard also continues to provide support to hard hit towns in northern parts of the state. In the Atkins area, the Guard has 18 personnel and 6 hummvees from 2nd Battalion, 142nd Fires Brigade out of Fort Smith providing cleanup and public safety assistance. In the Clinton area the Guard was asked to provide immediate water supportand subsequently supported the request with one 5,000-gallon water tanker truck and 29 Guardsmen. In the Mountain View area the Guard is providing one truck, a 30-K generator and two Soldiers from the 224th Maintenance Company from Mountain Home to provide power to the Mountain View courthouse.
