Bill to fine contractors who employ illegal immigrants fails
The House Committee on State Agencies and Governmental Affairs rejected Rep. Jim Nickels' (D-Sherwood) proposal to to fine contractors $200 per day for knowingly employing illegal immigrants. Eight people testified on the bill -- all against. Debate lasted until 10 minutes or so before the House was to convene for votes, when Rep. Larry Cowling raised a motion for immediate consideration. The bill failed on a voice vote -- no roll call was requested.
