Captioning demonstration of House proceedings
Next Tuesday, we'll host a demonstration of assistance available to the deaf and hard of hearing when the House convenes for votes at 1:30 p.m. With support from the Arkansas Coalition for the Education of Children who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (ACED) and the Arkansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ArkSHA), the House proceedings will be "captioned" and available for your viewing in real time on your laptop computer.
The technology used is called remote CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation), which involves an off-site translator listening to our proceedings, converting them to the written word and streaming the text to the internet. It'll be available here. My grandfather mastered sign language, and he'd be amazed to see the technological advances made available today for those who are deaf/hard of hearing.
