McDaniel checks in from Gaza
Cut and paste (and a cell phone pic) from an e-mail I just received from Attorney General Dustin McDaniel:
Greetings from Gaza. This wall [see pic below] is all that separates Israeli houses from Hamas sniper fire only yards away. We have our safety instructions in case of mortar fire or rockets. It happens several times each day in this area. We are supposed to lie down on the ground until the threat is over. Very comforting. One of the ladies with us is having a complete panic attack. She is terrified and in tears. The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) General who is with us and giving our briefing is not helping her feel better.
On the other side of this wall is Gaza City. From a little higher ground you can see this large city. We're leaving now to meet with local officials in the town of Sderot, about 5 miles from here.
Now in Sderot--The schools have steel shields that have been built over and beside them to protect them from incoming rockets. The bus pick up areas for kids are above ground concrete bomb shelters. The shelter in the other photo is in front of a boy scout after school center.
An alarm system that covers entire towns in Gaza announces incoming fire when triggered by military radar. We'll have between 15-20 seconds to lie down or find a nearby shelter.
The psychological impact on people who have to run for shelter from school, work and home all day and night is enormous. We are very blessed to enjoy the safety and security that we have. I'll be glad to see Arkansas soon.
