The big picture
Time to step back and look at the big picture of the $843,000,000 revenue surplus. With one whack, facilities would take care of more than half of it if we go along with the figure of $456MM, which I think we will.
There are proposals to fund additional projects for roads ($100MM), quick action on a super-project ($50MM), and the lawsuit ($44MM). Once looked at as noble proposals, the "rainy day fund" and additions for higher education are finding themselves on the outside looking in. The historic tax cut we pushed through last month, of course, is designed to be built in to future generated revenue.
This is a great time to go out as a term-limited legislator. The pendulum will swing back, and budget issues will be a lot tougher. It'd be nice to have some sort of rainy day fund (even $100 million) for that day.
On another note, the governor was in the House chamber earlier this afternoon visiting with individual members on specific legislation.
