New composition of the Arkansas House

Assuming John Edwards is able to hold on to his lead of 74 votes in House District 38, the new composition of the Arkansas House will be 71 Democrats, 28 Republicans, and 1 Green Party. The makeup will be similar to the 84th and 85th General Assemblies in 2003 and 2005. It also means that Arkansas is now 9th in terms of the widest majorities in the country (down from 4th).

Widest majorities in State House Chambers
1. Rhode Island (70D/5R) 93% D
2. Massachusetts (144D/15R/1I) 90% D
3. Hawaii (45D/6R) 88% D
4. West Virginia (79D/21R) 79% D
5. Connecticut (113D/38R) 75% D
6. Idaho (52R/18D) 74% R
7. Maryland (104D/36D/1I) 74% D
8. New York (110D/40R) 73% D
9. Arkansas (71D/28R/1G) 71% D

The Arkansas Senate remains 27D, 8R (77% D) and is ranked 6th in terms of the widest majorities in Senate chambers behind Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Idaho, and Kansas.
