Race for Hastert's seat has national implications -- Update
Illinois voters in the 14th congressional district will vote today to elect a candidate to fill the remainder of former Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert's term, the longest serving speaker in history. Two national political handicappers, Charlie Cook and Stuart Rothenberg, list the race as a toss-up. The candidates are Democrat Bill Foster, a scientist, and Republican Jim Oberweis, head of Oberweis Dairy. Here are a couple of Saturday articles on the election: Chicago Tribune, Washington Post.
Update: In a surprising upset, rookie Democratic candidate Bill Foster scored a comfortable victory over Republican dairyman Jim Oberweis. Here's Sunday's article from the Chicago Tribune.
