I went outside the meeting room, and Dustin was on his cell phone, which isn’t unusual. But his demeanor, which had been jovial just moments earlier, had turned grave. And his voice quivered just a bit when he delivered the news: “I just got word that someone walked into the Democratic state headquarters, said he was Jim Johnson and shot Bill Gwatney multiple times.”
I asked a couple more questions before he got another call, then returned to the meeting room because it was about time for the program to begin. My instincts at that point kicked in as I realized that McDaniel had to be among the first to know what had happened. I ducked into a corner and made a quick call to the Little Rock bureau of The Associated Press to make sure the news had reached the bureau. It hadn’t. I reported what I knew, which wasn’t much, and the reporter at the other end of the line said she would get on it. That was a few minutes after 12. The AP’s bulletin reached newspaper offices at 12:23.
